Want to Become Certified in Health Care Compliance®?

Be recognized for your experience and knowledge in health care compliance!

Step 1 QUALIFY
CHC® candidates must meet two eligibility requirements before sitting for the exam: Work Experience and Continuing Education.

  • Work Experience: Candidates must be either an Active or Allied Compliance Professional. Candidates can determine eligibility by being able to attest to the fact that their work experience fits into a category below (CCB staff is unable to determine eligibility on your behalf):
    • Active Compliance Professional:
      • Full-time position (minimum of one year in that position)
      • 50% of job duties directly related to health care compliance
      • Duties should include tasks directly related to those reflected on the exam content outline (see the handbook)
    • Allied Compliance Professional:
      • 1,500 consecutive hours of work experience in a health care compliance–related position
      • Duties should include tasks directly related to the exam content outline (see the handbook)
      • Allied Professionals include but are not limited to: Attorneys, Nurses, Auditors, Coders, HIM Professionals, etc.
  • Student Option: Students who complete a certificate program from a CCB-accredited university are exempt from the work experience requirement and qualify for the certification exam upon completion of the course.
  • Continuing Education: Candidates must obtain 20 CCB Continuing Education Units (CEUs) in the 12 months prior to sitting for the exam, of which a minimum of 50% must come from “live” trainings

Step 2 PREPARE
How can you prepare for the CHC® exam? HCCA faculty suggest the following:

Step 3 TEST
Candidates who have met the eligibility requirements may schedule their exam. The CHC® exam is offered on-site at many HCCA conferences (applications available on event page), as well as at local H&R Block locations (application in CHC Handbook).

For more information on scheduling an exam click here.

Step 4 MAINTAIN
Once certification is obtained, you are eligible to use your credentials for a two-year certification period, starting from when you pass the exam. At the end of the two-year certification period, you must submit the information below to maintain your certification. Failure to submit the appropriate documentation prior to your certification period expiration date will result in a lapse in your certification and your only option will be to retest:

  1. Submit the Renewal Application either by faxing or mailing the PDF form or submiting the web form.
  2. Presenting 40 CCB approved Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
  3. Renewal Fee ($100/members and $200/non‑members) Suggested methods for earning the required 40 CCB approved Continuing Education Units Include:
  • Attend one of many educational HCCA events ranging from one to four days—earn CEUs and network with your peers
  • Publication review: CEUs are available for quizzes based on comprehension of  Compliance Today and The Report on Medicare Compliance, as well as quizzes based on select HCCA books (please note: a maximum of 50% of your CEUs may come from these sources)
  • Submit non-HCCA events for accreditation consideration, use the Individual Accreditation Application to submit non-HCCA events (The Individual Accreditation Application was updated on Dec 1, 2011. Please be sure to use the most up-to-date copy.
  • Submit presentations or published articles
