WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE COMPLIANCE INSTITUTE
AND THE ACADEMY?
The Academy focuses on subject areas statistically shown to lie at
the heart of health care compliance practice. Courses are designed with
the expectation that participants have a basic knowledge of compliance
concepts and have had some professional experience (6-18 months) in a
compliance function. While not required for certification, this course
will give participants training in the skill set tested on the
Healthcare Compliance Certification Board’s Certified in
Healthcare Compliance (CHC) Exam, which is offered following the
Academy. Participants are limited in order to maintain a classroom
environment.
The Compliance Institute, on the other hand, brings together
compliance professionals at the world’s largest gathering of
compliance professionals to network and participate in a comprehensive
curriculum. There is a wide cross-section of seminars and
beginning and established compliance professionals can benefit from this
conference. (The certification exam is offered after this
conference as well).

WHY IS THE ROOM BLOCK FULL BEFORE THE CONFERENCE?
The hotel cutoff date is a guarantee by the hotel of the rate, only if
rooms within the block are still available.
The way we block rooms is according to history and hotel availability.
We do not book the full number of rooms for anticipated attendees for
several reasons. Firstly, if there is more than one attendee from
a company, often they will share a room. Secondly, not everyone
chooses to utilize the room block we set aside. They may be local
and just drive in, or they may stay in a different hotel. If not
all the rooms we block are utilized, HCCA is responsible for paying for
the remaining rooms, whether they are used or not. We do not want
to have a surplus of rooms for which we have to pay, being cognizant of
not incurring unnecessary costs for the Association and thus our
members

HOW DO I GET COMPLIANCE EDUCATION?
Attendance at our Compliance Academy is probably the best way to provide
a basic education on the role of a Compliance Officer. The
program covers the elements required to take the certification exam. You
then have the option of taking the exam right after the classes.
Watch our website for upcoming Academies.
Attending our other conferences is another great way of learning what
you need to know in compliance. See the Events page on our website www.hcca-info.org for upcoming
conferences, especially our large Annual Conference. The topics covered
span the gamut of compliance issues. This, plus our many other
conferences, present a great opportunity for networking with, and
learning from, other compliance professionals. If you cannot
travel to our many conferences, we also have many audio-conferences a
year on a variety of topics.
Membership in our Association gives you the opportunity to access
documents on our website uploaded by other members. You also have
access to the members’ directory for networking purposes and
substantial discounts on products and conferences.
For comprehensive compliance education, we also recommend the Health
Care Professionals Manual, which can be ordered from our website.
Quarterly updates are available by subscription.
We would also recommend Compliance 101 written by Greg Warner, Mayo
Clinic, and Debbie Troklus, University of Louisville, and Monitoring and
Auditing Practices for Effective Compliance by John Steiner, from the
Cleveland Clinic Health System Products are listed on our
website under “Shop Online”.
You may also wish to look on our website at a document entitled
Evaluating and Improving a Compliance Program, under Compliance
Info.

HOW DO I COMPARE YOUR CHC CERTIFICATION TO
OTHERS?
We believe the CHC has become the benchmark for the recognition of
compliance professionals. Our Association committed a great deal of
resources to developing our certification program. We did not just rely
on the experience of our certification board professionals to determine
the criteria and content of the examinations. We went out into the
field and did in-depth surveys of compliance professionals to determine
what they were actually doing and what they needed to know. We
then selected a testing agency with a great deal of professionalism and
experience, which could also offer testing sites across the country, for
those who did not want to attend an Academy or one of our conferences
where testing is offered.
If you are looking at other certifications, you would want to ask
questions such as:
-
How long has the program been in existence?
-
Does the body seem to exist just to sell products and
services?
-
Who is on the board of directors of the entity and who is on the
certification board or governing body?
