CHC Renewal

Attaining certification is an indication of mastery of a well-defined body of knowledge at a point in time. Periodic renewal of the certification is required to maintain certified status. Initial certification or renewal of certification is valid for two years.

Certificants may renew their certification through one of two routes:

  1. Re-examination and appropriate fee when eligibility requirements are satisfied OR
  2. Submission of the CHC Renewal application (web form) or CHC Renewal Application (Adobe PDF File) documenting 40 Compliance Certification Board (CCB) continuing education credits for the two-year period and payment of the renewal fee.

Failure to Renew: When a certificant does not maintain their credential (CEUs have not been maintained), and does not submit the appropriate forms and fees, candidates will be required to apply and retake the applicable examination. A certificant who fails to renew his/her credential within two years is no longer considered certified and may not use the credential in professional communications, such as on letterhead, stationery and business cards, in directory listings, and in signature.

If a candidate intends to maintain credentials, but will not meet the expiration deadline, we will allow a 10-day grace period. If a candidate anticipates not meeting the 10-day deadline, we will extend the grace period if requested in writing before original expiration date. The candidate will be required to pay a $50 late fee for every 30 days after expiration up to 60 days. Beyond 60 days after expiration the candidate will be required to make application and pass the current version of the examination. See RE-EXAMINATION

Re-examination: Candidates who wish to maintain certification through examination must make application and pass the current version of the examination. Individuals maintaining certification through examination are required to pay an examination fee in addition to regular renewal fees ($250.00 for members, $350.00 for non-members) in addition to regular renewal fees ($100 for members, $200 for non-members).

TO OBTAIN CEUs
There are various ways you may obtain credits.  In general:

CCB credits are accumulated by participating in CCB accredited seminars, workshops and conferences, writing for a publication, and/or serving as an instructor or facilitator of compliance related education.

If you use Continuing Education Units from events not accredited by us, you may apply independently for credits. Individuals seeking accreditation for a program which did not have CCB credits awarded may submit an Individual Accreditation Application

Eligibility to sit for the Certified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC) examination required the candidate to obtain a minimum of 20 Continuing Education Credits (CEU). CEUs must be relevant to the content outline and approved by the CCB. There is no requirement that they come from the HCCA.  Once CHC status is obtained the certificant is eligible for recertification every two years. Recertification required submission of the recertification fee and demonstration that the certificant obtained at least 40 CEU credits in the two year period prior to recertification. All CEU credits submitted to sit for the CHC examination or for recertification must be approved by the Compliance Certification Board (CCB).

The CEU credits can be obtained in a number of ways including publication reviews. CEU credits for publication review will only be awarded for publication approved by the CCB to receive such credits. The use of publication reviews for CEU credits will be limited to 50% of the required CEUs. Eligibility to sit for the CHC examination requires 20 CEUs, of which, no more than 10 may be from publication review. CHC recertification requires 40 CEUs over two years, of which, no more than 20 can be from publication review.
