Job Summary

The Copy Editor is responsible for ensuring the editorial team maintains a high level of quality for all published content and ensuring that all material follows house style and excellent writing principles. The Copy Editor oversees and ensures the development of quality content both written and visual form, from idea conceptualization to publication.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Edit compliance and ethics know-how resources (overviews, articles, news summaries, practical examples, appendix items and glossary terms) for print and online publication.
  • Edit content for consistent look, feel, and writing quality.
  • Become fully knowledgeable in compliance and ethics publications and writing principles and ensure that our writers apply them correctly and consistently.
  • Identify and correct incomplete or incorrect references and citations in print and online copy .
  • Provide additional proofreading support to other departments, such as resources for conferences, our magazines, and marketing.
  • Contribute to editorial development projects, including integrating online products.
  • Maintain style guides to ensure consistent standards; make style decisions, recommend revisions to copy editing procedures and protocols.
  • Format, edit and post website content.
  • Participate in user experience testing and design.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications or Publishing.
  • 3-5 years of copy editing experience.
  • Experience on books, magazines, journals or similar publications.
  • A keen interest in the topics of compliance, law, administrative regulations and digital and print publishing practices.
  • An excellent command of writing, grammar, punctuation and plain-English principles.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain high quality work and prioritize while meeting tight deadlines.
  • Excellent team-working skills.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Understanding of legal and administrative citations, sources and authorities, including Bluebook citation formatting.
  • Experience with following a recognized style guide, such as Chicago or AP, or a house style guide.
  • Ability to work autonomously.
  • Working experience with XML and Citations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CHC and CCEP certifications helpful
  • Experience with using content management systems is a plus.
