As 2020 comes to a close, it is clear that the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic will continue well into 2021. The next couple of months sound ominous, but the longer-term outlook is improving. At this point, all of our in-person conferences will be virtual in nature through the first five months of 2021, including our 25thannual Compliance Institute in April. We have a few reduced-size compliance academies scheduled during this period, since we have found that those can be done with minimal risk if precautions are taken. We will closely monitor the situation and postpone any academy, if we determine it is unwise to hold them.

We hope there will be a gradual return to in-person conferences in the second half of 2021 and are tentatively making plans. Check back here from time to time for updates. In the meantime, please also check our evert-expanding listing of virtual educational events.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. Be safe and have a happy holiday season!

We continue to closely monitor developments associated with the COVID-19 pandemic nationally and internationally, paying particular attention to locations where we have scheduled events. All of our in-person events through early September have either been cancelled, postponed or converted to a virtual format. Additionally, we have added and will continue to add new virtual events so that compliance professionals can stay up to date and earn live continuing education units (CEUs) .

With some regions improving while others trend in the wrong direction, we will continue to keep close tabs on developments, always keeping member, attendee, and employee health and safety first and foremost among our priorities. Please keep in mind that cancelling a live event involves many considerations, including the willingness of hotels to agree to a cancellation without a substantial penalty. If it is safe to do so, we will proceed with live events, even at a reduced size, since we know that many of you prefer the interaction and networking. If we do proceed with events, even at a reduced size, we will work closely with the hotel to ensure strict health and safety standards are met, including appropriate social distancing.

Until next time, stay safe everyone!

April 16, 2020

Since my last message on March 17 (see below), some things have changed while others remain the same. The COVID-19 pandemic itself continues to be very serious and the toll it is taking on families is severe. Here at SCCE & HCCA our entire workforce continues to work remotely and will continue to do so at least through early May. So, I will continue to ask for your patience in connection with your orders and inquiries.

We have now cancelled, postponed, or converted to a virtual format every in-person conference scheduled through June 30. Most of the one-day regional compliance conferences through June have been converted to virtual formats. The most recent development is the conversion of the May 31 – June 3 SCCE Higher Education Compliance Conference and the HCCA Research Compliance Conference, to a virtual format. We were quite pleased with the results when we converted HCCA’s 24th Annual Compliance Institute to a virtual format on just two weeks’ notice. We are excited to apply our learning from the converted events to make for an even better experience with the Higher Education and Research Conferences. And just today, we began a series of 20 web conferences that had previously been scheduled as sessions for SCCE’s European Compliance & Ethics Institute. These web conferences continue through April 30, with recorded versions available afterwards.

One event we will not convert to a virtual format is an academy. Our basic and specialized compliance & ethics academies involve a tremendous amount of interaction, group exercises, and case discussion that simply would not work effectively in a virtual setting. All academies through June 30 are cancelled, but we will re-book these important events as soon as we get a better feel for when it is safe to do so.

The Compliance Certification Board (CCB)® has relaxed its certification renewal process to give those with an expiration date between 12/31/2019 – 5/31/2020 more time to meet their continuing education unit requirements if needed. All of the exam testing centers are currently closed due to the pandemic, but we’ll keep you posted as this changes. For those of you needing CCB CEU credits, remember that all of our web conference events qualify for CCB CEU credit and we are now holding more of these events than ever before.

It’s too early to predict when in-person conferences can resume. Hopefully, it will be in July or soon after. But you can check back here, as we will make announcements if any additional conferences are canceled, rescheduled, or converted to a virtual format. And please note that if you have already signed up, or plan to sign up, for a future in-person conference or academy, we are now operating under a very flexible cancellation policy – where you can either request a full refund or carry credit forward to future events. And if you’ve signed up for an in-person event but prefer not to participate if the event is converted to a virtual one, our flexible refund policy will apply.

That’s all for now. Until next time, please be safe and I wish all of you the very best.

March 27, 2020

Due to a state-wide stay-at-home order and for the safety of our employees, we are temporarily closing the SCCE & HCCA home office in Minneapolis, MN through April 10, 2020.  While most of our staff will continue to work remotely, mail processing, print book order fulfillment, refunds and payables will be temporarily suspended, but all other activities will continue.

SCCE & HCCA staff will continue to be available to respond to your questions Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Central U.S. time zone).

March 17, 2020

At SCCE & HCCA, we are committed to the health and safety of our employees, members, event attendees, partners and compliance professionals around the world. We are closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation and will continue making informed decisions based on updates from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and other federal, state, and local agencies.

To date we have taken the following measures with SCCE & HCCA conferences:

  • SCCE’s European Compliance & Ethics Institute (ECEI), scheduled for 16-18 March in Amsterdam was cancelled and will be replaced with a series of Web Conferences that will be announced soon on the ECEI website
  • HCCA’s 24th Annual Compliance Institute (CI) scheduled for March 29 – April 1 has been cancelled and is being replaced with a 3-day Virtual Conference being planned for March 30  – April 1; Details will be announced on March 18 on the CI website
  • All SCCE & HCCA one-day Regional Compliance Conferences scheduled through the end of May are being cancelled as in-person events and replaced with virtual conferences.
  • SCCE & HCCA Basic Compliance Academies scheduled for April and May are being rescheduled for later dates.

Hopefully, events scheduled for May 31 and beyond will go on as planned. However, we will continue to monitor COVID-19 developments and proceed accordingly.

SCCE & HCCA Offices and Customer Service

To help ensure the safety and health of SCCE & HCCA staff, we are initiating a social distancing plan that will temporarily result in most employees working remotely. Our office hours will continue to be 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Central U.S. time zone) Monday through Friday. However, as we navigate through our remote work program, please be patient. Response times to your calls and e-mail inquiries may be slightly delayed.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

We are scheduling as many virtual educational conferences as possible to provide options to earn live CEUs. Inevitably, some of you may find yourselves having difficulty meeting deadlines to obtain CEUs for renewal of your Compliance Certification Board (CCB)® certifications.  CCB has announced a temporary waiver of the fee to obtain a 60-day extension, beyond the 30-day grace period. This waiver is available for renewals with expiration dates through May 31, 2020.  CCB will continue to assess the needs of certified individuals in the coming weeks.

Thanks for your understanding during these unsettling times. Please stay healthy and diligent. With healthy doses of care and patience we will get through this.
